Writer-intellectual Basil (Alan Bates), on a trip to Greece to investigate the inheritance of his father’s property in Crete, is befriended by freedom-loving boisterous Greek peasant Alexis Zorba (Anthony Quinn, in a volcanic, career-defining performance). When things go wrong, as they inevitably do in the course of their many adventures together, Zorba teaches Basil how to enjoy life even under the most trying circumstances. Zorba the Greek is filled with humour, pathos, tears, and joy—a classic. With outstanding performances (Bates, Quinn, Lila Kedrova, Irene Papas), black-and-white cinematography, faces of the people of Crete, and the music of Mikis Theodorakis, Zorba is lasting cinema that can be enjoyed today.

Winner of three Academy Awards and nominated for seven, including three for prominent Greek-Cypriot director Michael Cacoyannis.

Want to know more about the Film Club?

The Hebden Bridge Film Club (HBFC) is an informal group of Picture House attendees formed in 2022. We stay in touch via Facebook and/or WhatsApp groups.

Are you new to the area or simply want to meet new people? There are lots of opportunities to be a part of HBFC; we occasionally meet up after a film to discuss it over a drink nearby and we also have monthly drinks for anyone that can make it.

All are welcome, particularly those who are alone and want to connect with like-minded people. Make sure to join the Film Club on Facebook (we are a very friendly bunch) and say hello!
