From Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer comes The End: a one-of-a-kind tale set at the end of the world. Taking shape as a soaring musical, this TIFF and London Film Festival selection asks a resonant question for us all: what happens when you recognise that your life, and your family, aren’t what you thought they were?
Twenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable, one family clings to a sense of normalcy while confined to a palatial bunker. Wealthy ex-ballerina Mother, former oil executive Father, their precocious Son (and a chosen few companions) keep a happy routine.
But when a Girl turns up at their underground doorstep, with her own past and a plain-spoken perspective, the group’s blind optimism begins to unravel. As long-repressed emotions resurface, and a connection blossoms between the outsider and the Son, a changed existence becomes the only way forward.
Starring Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton, George MacKay (1917), Moses Ingram and Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon, The End is an inspired showcase for today’s best actors. Rich with daring, romance, and song, this clear-eyed vision blends satire and sincerity
to shed light on the conflict between the truth and the stories we tell.
