Kneecap
18
Dir: Rich Peppiatt
Cast: Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in their acting debuts alongside Academy Award® nominated Michael Fassbender with Simone Kirby, Jessica Reynolds, Fionnuala Flaherty and Josie Walker.
Rich Peppiatt’s raucous and infectious debut feature is a heightened tale of proudly Irish rap trio Kneecap’s origin story, as Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin and JJ Ó Dochartaigh kick-start a musical revolution.
Of the 80,000 native Irish speakers, 6,000 live in the North of Ireland and three of them became a rap group called Kneecap. This is the real-life story of how the anarchic, politically-charged Belfast trio – comprising childhood best friends Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh and Naoise Ó Cairealláin, along with high school teacher JJ Ó Dochartaigh – became the unlikely figureheads of a civil rights movement to save and reinvigorate their mother tongue.
A bolt from the blue for Irish cinema, channelling the frenetic energy of Trainspotting and showcasing the fiercely attitude-spiked beats of the cult rap trio, this rallying cry for the preservation of language and the ferocious power of music is a crowd-pleasing triumph for both die hard fans as well as newcomers to the inimitable power of Kneecap.
