On trial for heresy as she claims she has spoken to God, Joan of Arc is imprisoned and subjected to inhumane treatment and scare tactics at the hands of church court officials, who attempt to bully her into changing her story. Her punishment will earn her perpetual martyrdom.
Celebrated for its innovative close ups, emotional intensity and pioneering film techniques; the film centres on a stunning performance by Renée Falconetti as Joan who braves the threat of torture to stand fast for her beliefs. The films almost plays like a re-enactment of the trial with vivid terror, anger and belief amazingly captured throughout.
