Robert Mulligan’s classic adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel set in the racially charged atmosphere of Macon County, Alabama in the 1930s, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is a poignant coming-of-age story.

It is told from the perspective of a young girl nicknamed Scout (Mary Badham) whose widowed father Atticus Finch (Peck), an attorney, decides to defend a black man (Brock Peters) charged with raping a white woman.

But the bigoted townspeople would rather lynch the accused than try him, and they make life hellish for the lawyer, his daughter and his son Jem.

While their father is in the throes of the trial, his bright, inquisitive children learn a hard and unforgettable lesson in justice, morality and prejudice, part of which requires overcoming their unfounded fear of their mysterious neighbour Boo Radley (a very young Robert Duvall).

Want to know more about the Film Club?

The Hebden Bridge Film Club (HBFC) is an informal group of Picture House attendees formed in 2022. We stay in touch via Facebook and/or WhatsApp groups.

Are you new to the area or simply want to meet new people? There are lots of opportunities to be a part of HBFC; we occasionally meet up after a film to discuss it over a drink nearby and we also have monthly drinks for anyone that can make it.

The Film Club votes monthly for a screening at the Picture House – all are welcome! Particularly those who are alone and want to connect with like-minded people. Make sure to join the Film Club on Facebook (we are a very friendly bunch) and say hello!
