Set in 1877, Elizabeth is admired for her fashion and beauty, however, she is about to turn 40 and the pressure to present as eternally youthful is mounting. Not one to bow to orders, she stirs up scandal throughout the court, taking trips abroad away from her loveless marriage and spending hours visiting the women at the local asylum. Kriep’s phenomenal portrayal of Sisi was awarded the Best Performance in this year’s Un Certain Regard competition at Cannes.
