Acclaimed filmmaker James Gray (We Own the Night, Ad Astra) returns with a deeply personal coming-of-age story about the strength of family and the generational pursuit of the American Dream.

Inspired by his own upbringing in Queens, New York in the 1980s, and shot on location on the same row of houses where he grew up, Gray’s tale follows Paul (Banks Repeta), a sixth graderwho dreams of being an artist. That dream is chained to family obligation and trauma, with Paul’s world is split between the support of his grandfather (Anthony Hopkins) and mother,Esther (Anne Hathaway) and the wrath of emotionally blocked engineer dad, Irving (Jeremy Strong).

Paul’s best friend is John Crocker, an African-American boy. The two are inseparable but following mischievous experimentation, Paul’s parents decide to transfer him to the private prep school his older brother attends. Here, the student body is almost exclusively white, privileged – and prejudiced (it’s also Donald Trump’s alma mater). Together, the boys concoct a risky scheme to escape their lives and run away to Florida…
