Have Your Say on the Future of Hebden Bridge Picture House
Hebden Royd Town Council and Hebden Bridge Picture House - the valley’s independent, not-for-profit cinema since 1921 - are inviting the public to share their views on ambitious new plans to restore and future-proof the much-loved community venue.
Following earlier consultations about a second screen, the project has grown into a wider Heritage Project to repair and conserve the Grade II listed building, improve accessibility, and secure the cinema’s long-term future. An initial Expression of Interest has been approved by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, and the Town Council is now preparing a Development Application for funding.
Community input is vital at this stage to shape the emerging designs and demonstrate strong public support.
Cllr Keith Butterick, Chair of the Picture House Committee, said:
“This is a once-in-a-generation chance to repair and improve the cinema so it can thrive for decades to come. We want local people, cinema-goers and first-time visitors alike to help guide the plans and ensure the building remains a welcoming cultural hub for everyone.”
How to take part:
• Online survey - now live here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DNSLBYW
• Public drop-in sessions - free, informal events at the cinema and community venues (dates to be announced in October)
The proposals being developed include essential repairs and conservation of the historic building, major accessibility upgrades such as a lift and improved facilities, and measures to improve energy efficiency. Plans also explore creating a second screen for more flexible programming alongside expanded opportunities for community use, learning and heritage activities.
Feedback from this consultation will help refine the designs submitted to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and guide Town Council in their final decision-making in 2026.
